Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata aê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
Eu vou
Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata ê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
Madeira boa é como a amizade
É difícil de se encontrar
Amizade eu guardo no peito
E da madeira vou fazer meu berimbau
Eu vou
Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata ê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
Se Mestre Bimba estivesse aqui
Pra me ensinar escolher madeira
Eu entrava agora na mata
Tirava ipê e pau pereira
Eu vou
Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata ê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
A noite vem eu entro na mata
Lua clareia vou procurar
Jequitibá e massaranduba
O guatambu eu devo achar
Eu vou
Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata ê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
Na velha África se usava o Ungo
Nas grandes festas religiosas
O quijenge é um dialeto Umbundo
É o berimbau que conquistou o mundo
Eu vou
Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata ê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
Na lua cheia vou colher os frutos
E na minguante eu tiro a madeira
Vou para fazer meu berimbau
Vou para tocar na capoeira
Eu vou
Vou esperar a lua voltar
Eu quero entrar na mata ê
Eu vou tirar madeira boa
Pro meu berimbau fazer
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest there
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau
I will
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest ê
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau
Good wood is like friendship
It is hard to find
I keep friendship in my heart
And from the wood I will make my berimbau
I will
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest ê
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau
If Mestre Bimba were here
To teach me how to choose wood
I would enter the forest now
Take ipê and pau pereira
I will
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest ê
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau
The night comes I enter the forest
Moonlight clears I will look for
Jequitibá and massaranduba
I must find the guatambu
I will
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest ê
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau
In old Africa they used Ungo
In great religious festivals
Quijenge is an Umbundo dialect
It is the berimbau that conquered the world
I will
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest ê
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau
At the full moon I will gather the fruits
And at the waning I take the wood
I will make my berimbau
I will play it in capoeira
I will
I will wait for the moon to return
I want to enter the forest ê
I will take good wood
To make my berimbau

Berimbau
- The berimbau is a single-string musical bow of African origin that functions as the absolute leader and commander of the roda.
- The instrument dictates the exact speed, stylistic tone, and combat intensity of the capoeiristas through specific rhythms known as toques.
- A traditional berimbau is constructed from a wooden staff, a steel wire, a hollowed gourd resonator, a small stone or coin, a bamboo shaker, and a wooden thin stick.
- In a traditional orchestra, three distinct pitches are used: the deep-toned gunga to lead the group, the medium médio to hold the rhythm, and the high-pitched viola to improvise.
- Enslaved Africans historically used the live music of the bow to camouflage their outlawed martial art, making the training look like an innocent dance to colonial authorities.
- Today, the instrument holds a sacred status within the art, and capoeiristas show immense reverence toward it, celebrating its spiritual voice in countless traditional songs.
Mestre Bimba
Mestre Bimba (Manuel dos Reis Machado) was the legendary founder of Capoeira Regional, a faster and more combative style of the art.
- Mestre Bimba (1899–1974) revolutionized the discipline by creating Capoeira Regional, modernizing the traditional Afro-Brazilian art.
- He integrated elements of Batuque and gymnastics to make capoeira a highly effective and structured martial art.
- In 1932, he founded the world's first official capoeira academy in Salvador, Bahia, establishing a rigorous training method.
- He successfully convinced President Getúlio Vargas to lift the legal ban on capoeira, declaring it Brazil's national sport.
- He introduced systematic innovations like white uniforms, a formal graduation system using colored scarves, and standardized combat sequences.
- Disillusioned by a lack of government support in Bahia, he moved to Goiânia, where he tragically died in poverty a year later.
