Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

O Mestre Bimba foi se embora
Por favor tire o chapéu
Mas não vai chorar agora
Mestre Bimba foi pro céu

Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

O Mestre Bimba foi se embora
Mas deixou jogo bonito
Deve estar jogando agora
Numa roda no infinito

Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

O Mestre Bimba foi se embora
Não teve choro e nem mistério
Berimbau tocou sereno
Na porta do cemitério

Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

Mestres de capoeira
Existem muitos por aí
Mas igual ao Mestre Bimba
Nunca mais vai existir

Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

Mestre Bimba foi- se embora
Para nunca mais voltar
Disse adeus à capoeira
E foi pro céu descansar

Chora capoeira
Capoeira chora
O chora capoeira
Mestre Bimba foi se embora

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

Mestre Bimba went away
Please lift your hat
But don’t start crying now
Mestre Bimba is in heaven

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

Mestre Bimba went away
But he left a beautiful game
He must be playing right now
In a circle in infinity

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

O Mestre Bimba went away
Without a reason or mystery
The berimbau played serenely
at the gate of the cemitary

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

Masters of Capoeira
There’s many of them around
But equal to Mestre Bimba
None will ever be found

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

Mestre Bimba went away
Never to return
He said goodbye to Capoeira
and went to heaven to rest

Cry Capoeira
Capoeira cry
Cry Capoeira
Mestre Bimba went away

Berimbau

  • The berimbau is a single-string musical bow of African origin that functions as the absolute leader and commander of the roda.
  • The instrument dictates the exact speed, stylistic tone, and combat intensity of the capoeiristas through specific rhythms known as toques.
  • A traditional berimbau is constructed from a wooden staff, a steel wire, a hollowed gourd resonator, a small stone or coin, a bamboo shaker, and a wooden thin stick.
  • In a traditional orchestra, three distinct pitches are used: the deep-toned gunga to lead the group, the medium médio to hold the rhythm, and the high-pitched viola to improvise.
  • Enslaved Africans historically used the live music of the bow to camouflage their outlawed martial art, making the training look like an innocent dance to colonial authorities.
  • Today, the instrument holds a sacred status within the art, and capoeiristas show immense reverence toward it, celebrating its spiritual voice in countless traditional songs.

Mestre Bimba

Mestre Bimba (Manuel dos Reis Machado) was the legendary founder of Capoeira Regional, a faster and more combative style of the art.

  • Mestre Bimba (1899–1974) revolutionized the discipline by creating Capoeira Regional, modernizing the traditional Afro-Brazilian art.
  • He integrated elements of Batuque and gymnastics to make capoeira a highly effective and structured martial art.
  • In 1932, he founded the world's first official capoeira academy in Salvador, Bahia, establishing a rigorous training method.
  • He successfully convinced President Getúlio Vargas to lift the legal ban on capoeira, declaring it Brazil's national sport.
  • He introduced systematic innovations like white uniforms, a formal graduation system using colored scarves, and standardized combat sequences.
  • Disillusioned by a lack of government support in Bahia, he moved to Goiânia, where he tragically died in poverty a year later.
